New HARRASSOWITZ Customized Subject Tag |
Composers who faced suppression under totalitarian regimes We have added a new customized subject tag to the HARRASSOWITZ Composer Database for composers who suffered persecution under totalitarian regimes. In Nazi Germany and the communist regimes of Eastern Europe (as well as in other regions), many composers suffered political persecution. Their works were banned and excluded from musical life, their careers hindered or destroyed; they were imprisoned in jails, concentration camps, and the Gulag, and many were murdered. Some composers mangaged to escape and built new lives in exile.
Many of the composers fell into oblivion as a result of persecution, and their works were often ignored or rarely performed for decades. Since the 1980's there has been a steadily growing interest in the music of these composers. Many publishers are devoting themselves to suppressed music with great commitment; for example, Boosey & Hawkes and the Dutch publisher Donemus with its series Forbidden Music Regained.
In the HARRASSOWITZ database of 20th and 21st century composers, nearly 190 composers are currently tagged with the new customized subject tag “composers who faced suppression under totalitarian regimes.” We have also marked all sheet music editions that we have announced since 2000 with this label in our title database.
Users can search for these editions specifically in Fokus, where there are over 3,600 sheet music editions with this topic. Using additional filters, you can narrow down your search to specific composers, publishers, instrumentations, etc. You can also request back files or NOOLs (Not On Order List) on this topic.
We appreciate your interest and are happy to answer any further questions you may have. If you do not yet have access to Fokus, the HARRASSOWITZ system for acquisition and management of scholarly resources, please write to service@harrassowitz.de.
