HARRASSOWITZ is encouraging libraries to transition from print periodical subscriptions to electronic formats as publishers increasingly pause or discontinue shipment of physical copies due to ongoing supply chain challenges.

While books and periodicals remain exempt from tariffs, confusion remains about declarations and paperwork across various national shipping services and shipping costs continue to increase. Over the past several months, numerous academic and commercial publishers have announced temporary suspensions or permanent reductions in print distribution. These changes have resulted in delayed deliveries, incomplete volumes, and uncertainty for libraries as to if and when they will receive their issues.

Electronic access to journal content provides immediate and reliable availability without the burden of additional paperwork for Customs and Border Control. We therefore advise libraries to review their list of print subscriptions early this year in order to identify content that can be moved to e-only for 2027.

HARRASSOWITZ is happy to assist you in any way needed to review format availability. All media versions of a title are available in Fokus, the HARRASSOWITZ system for acquisition and management of scholarly resources. In addition, users can link to various format options and easily change formats during the renewal season by using Online Renewal Management in Fokus. Fokus also contains rich access and licensing information, as well as accessibility information from publishers.
Please make sure your E-Resource Profile in Fokus is up to date with your institution’s current information.
