| The 'Vienna Edition' will be continued!
|
Following an interruption of 19 years, the publishing house Vittorio Klostermann has decided to continue the publication of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s 'Vienna Edition.'
In October 1974 Wittgenstein’s heirs entrusted Michael Nedo with the publication of his Complete Works, designed to make available all texts from the manuscripts in a philologically dependable edition, of which the first volume was published in 1993. For the time being, the last volume 8.1 (TS 211, Part1) was published in 2000.
In an interview with “Schweizer Buchhandel” Sir Karl Popper called the 'Vienna Edition' “the most essential book edition of the century” setting standards for book creation and typography.
After ceasing publication, the continuation of the edition seemed highly unlikely as the database of Wittgenstein manuscripts offered by the University of Bergen was assumed to satisfy the scholarly needs. However, comparing pages of the digital ‘Bergen Edition’ to the respective pages in the printed volume, it becomes obvious that the readability and the access to an understanding of the author’s thought by a printed book remains unsurpassed.
Within the next three years, 16 further volumes will be published in order to bring the Edition of the Wittgenstein-MSS-Korpus The Big Typescript von 1929–1934 to a close. The price for each volume will be between 100 and 200 Euro depending on its extent.
