MGG Online was developed by the publishers Bärenreiter and JB Metzler in collaboration with Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale (RILM) and comprises the complete content of the second edition of Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart with over 19,000 articles on all areas of music as well as many related fields such as literature, philosophy and the visual arts. Articles are added on a rolling basis.

The user-friendly interface of MGG Online opens up the encyclopedia by individually selectable search criteria with highly developed search and browse functions.
